MJC holds its ground

Following ongoing speculation on whether or not Orion Cold Storage - which has been central in a halal scandal that broke last month - will be recertified to distribute halal imports, the Muslim Judicial Council (MJC) on Thursday reaffirmed its strong condemnation for what it called the "scandalous, malicious and criminal relabeling of pork as halal and other violations at the Orion Cold Storage". At the same time, it slammed those who had misused the opportunity to criticise the MJC and reiterated that the products it had certified as halal was indeed fit for Muslim consumption.

Haj: tabloid must apologise

A daily tabloid newspaper has been slapped on the wrist by the Press Ombudsman after it published three scathing articles about a local haj operator whom it accused of scamming one hujaaj of his haj money. In October this year, the Daily Voice newspaper reported that Aslam Toefy from Dhuyufullah Haj and Umrah Travel had stolen R78 000 from Abdullah Damon, for a haj package he did not deliver as promised.

MJC urges safe holidays

The Muslim Judicial Council's (MJC) 40 day campaign 'Working towards an Exemplary Society' is well under way, and according to MJC Secretary General Maulana Abdul Khaliq Allie, they have been interacting daily with a group of youth from Lavender Hill, where the initiative kicked off. "We are dealing with a volatile situation in a community that has major issues on the ground. These young people grow up in a society where violence and drugs is an everyday situation," Allie said.

Snowflake Easy Mix (cake mixes) Haraam

I was speaking to my sister about this and that and as I was about to end my conversation when I mentioned that I was going to bake using my Snowflake easy mix whereupon she told me that it was haraam. I was shocked as the packaging suggested nothing haraam unless the colourant (which had E150 in brackets beside it) and raising agents were the haraam ingredients in the muffin mix.

Tabligh to Muslims

"Why does the Tabligh Jamaat go mostly to Muslims?"

Why does Tabligh Jamaat preach, teach, talk, and walk amongst mostly Muslims. Firstly, many times the Tabligh Jamaat because of their conspicuous nature have to work and give Da'wah to non- Muslims. This happens at bus stops, railway platforms, airport areas and on the road.

Secondly, when someone is doing well in accordance to the Shari'ah, then allow them to carry on. No one is stopping one from giving Da'wah to non-Muslims provided one knows the Shar'i requirements and perimeters for this important responsibility. Thirdly, in the Shari'ah we have many examples to prove that teaching, learning and advising Muslims was done.

Ummah demands answers on Hajj debacle

The Hajj industry in South Africa has gone beyond facilitating a sacred fundamental of the Shariah and has become a landscape for power struggles, white collar crimes, and allegations of money laundering and direct violations of Islamic law. In honouring the decision to facilitate a probe into the Hajj scandal, Channel Islam International conducted a discussion on Wednesday night piloted by Global Dynamic presenter, Inayat Wadee. The discussion focused on the United Ulama Council of South Africa (UUCSA), their role in the Hajj industry and their stance in bringing about solutions.

Musa ibn Abil Ghassan

Not much is known about the life of this hero of Islam in its last days in Spain. His name was Musa ibn Abil Ghassan. He was a knight from a royal lineage. He reproached the Muslim king of Granada Abu Abdullah Muhammad in 1489 for his submission to the Christians and strove to rekindle the spirit of Jihad among the Muslims in Spain.
