KHUTBAH FEATURE Part 2 - As Muslims we must fulfill acts that Allah has demanded from us in terms of salah, zakah, fasting and haj - acts of worshipping Allah. Every good act done for the sake of Allah is an act of worship. This includes protecting the environment. Reduce carbon: MJC

As the Western Cape Religious Leaders Forum (WCRLF) launched the Pan-African campaign called "We Have Faith - Act Now for Climate Justice", the Muslim Judicial Council (MJC) joined the call on South Africans to reduce their carbon footprints. The campaign consists of a petition to world leaders attending the COP17 talks in Durban in December and also aimed to conscientise congregants about the effects of climate change and the reduction of their carbon footprint.

Shaykh Dr Ridwaan Gallant, representative of the MJC and South African Faith Communities' Environment Institute, urged Muslims to discourage engagement in activities that would negatively affect the environment. "The MJC stands for climate justice. We appeal to each and every one to reduce their carbon in the atmosphere because presently the carbon dioxide in the atmosphere has already reached 350ppm (parts per million) in the atmosphere," he told VOC.
