    Scandal boosted awareness

In all difficulties there are positives and the biggest gain out of last month's halal scandal - which saw imported meat, including pig hearts, being relabelled as halal - was the increased public awarenessi it created. This is the view of the South African National Halal Authority (Sanha) after last week's meeting between the four halal bodies to address the malpractise in the halal industry in the wake of the Orion Cold Storage scandal.

    Why no uniform halal standards?

Friday's ruling in the Cape High Court that prevented the practice of relabelling non-halal imported products as halal in order to be distributed to manufacturers and wholesalers for Muslim consumption demonstrated the importance of uniform halal certifying standards and procedures. It also brought to the fore the infamous differences among the country's four main halal issuing authorities on this point.

According to the South African National Halaal Authority (Sanha), the National Independent Halaal Trust (NIHT) and the Muslim Judicial Council Halal Trust (MJCHT), the Orion matter reaffirmed the need for them to reach agreement on a set of halal certification standards that all parties could be satisfied with. Observers say this might be the closest the halal authorities have been in some years to reaching agreement on an issue.

    Orion investigation underway

In the wake of Friday's court proceedings where 17 applicants including the South African National Halal Authority (Sanha) applied for an urgent interim interdict against Orion Cold Storage, investigations into alleged wrongdoing by the meat importer would now get underway. Instead of granting an interim interdict at the Western Cape High Court on Friday, an undertaking by Orion Cold Storage's director, Patrick Gaertner, was made an order of the court at the request of the applicant's attorneys, much to the reluctance of Gaertner's legal team.

    Halal ruling welcomed

"We are delighted about the outcome, alhamdulillah." That was the word from Maulana Saeed Navlakhi of the South African National Halal Authority (Sanha), speaking just before noon on Friday after the application brought by 17 parties to prevent a local exporter from relabelling imported non halal products as halal was made an order of court. Last Monday the applicants applied for a search and seizure order which was granted and executed two days later. Last Thursday the matter came to court again for argument as was postponed by a week. On Friday morning it was finally argued before Judge Leslie Weinkove.

    We don't blame MJC: Orion

The attention moves to the Cape Town High Court once more on Friday morning where the application for an interim interdict sought by 17 parties against a local importer in an infamous saga on halal imports is set to get underway after it was postponed a day earlier. On Thursday there was a media frenzy around the director of Orion Cold Storage, Patrick Gaertner - the man at the centre of a halal meat scandal that has rocked the Western Cape. The hearing had been set for Thursday, but the case was postponed after it had to be reassigned to a new judge in a case that involves the South African National Halaal Authority as one of the applicants.

On the steps of the court, in the midst of protesting students of a Cape Town uloom, Gaertner said he did not blame the Muslim Judicial Council (MJC) for suspending their halal certification of the company. "They [MJC] obviously have to look out for their community," said Gaertner.

Orion case postponed for a day

The much talked about case in the Muslim community regarding the Western Cape cold storage company Orion was heard in the Cape High Court today, Thursday 17 November 2011. The following was reported by Radio Voice of the Cape.

    Halal: worse fears confirmed

Another full house is expected at the Cape Town High Court on Thursday where argument is due to start in a case of 17 applicants seeking to interdict Orion Cold Storage from relabelling imported meat products as halal. According to Maulana Saeed Navlakhi of the South African National Halaal Authority (Sanha) - one of the applicants in the matter that starts at 10am - the admission in opposing papers filed by the respondent that relabelling had taken place had sent shockwaves through the Muslim community since it confirmed their worst fears.

National Consumer Forum: Open Letter to MJC

The National Consumer Forum has taken an active role in the Halaal Label Fraud case involving Orion Cold Storage Company. We have laid a Criminal charge of Fraud and contravention of the Agricultural Products Standards Act at the Muizenberg Police Station. We have also joined the existing High Court Application brought by the South African National Halaal Authority and others as Amicus Curi.

We have some serious concerns with regard to the role of the Halaal Certifying Authority in this instance the Muslim Judicial Council Halaal Trust has played in this matter.

    Fury over halal expose

As an undercover video clip showing the alleged sordid operation of a local meat importing company continues to go viral on the internet, outraged VOC listeners expressed their shock at the revelations, exposed on Open Lines this week. The company in question - Orion Cold Storage - is accused of importing unhalal meat products and deliberately repackaging them as halal, in order to be fit for Muslim consumption.

The matter was brought to light when the South African National Halaal Authority (Sanha) including a number of other roleplayers approached the Cape High Court to force the company to halt its operation with immediate effect. Shortly after VOC posted the story on Wednesday evening, the matter went viral and by Saturday morning the story had been read almost 13,000 times, setting a new record for the new VOCFM website. This prompted VOC's airwaves and website to be flooded with comments as rate Muslims all over the country made themselves heard.
