Gulf International Tours fights to clear name

Local travel agent, Gulf International Tours (GIT), has distanced itself from any individuals trading under its name who have allegedly taken hujjaj to Makkah this year or accepted money or passports for haj visas that would have been sourced outside the official haj quota. Speaking to VOC on Tuesday, the company who had not been accredited for haj this year, said it was pursuing legal action to protect its good name from any "unscrupulous" practises that have allegedly been commited in its name.

Mandate achieved: Friends of the Hujjaj

The meeting held in Athlone on Tuesday evening following the haj visa scandal "exceeded expectations" and resulted in a clear mandate being given for the newly formed Friends of the Hujjaj (FotH) to proceed with action on behalf of hujjaj who have been negatively affected by the issue. That was according to Imraahn Mukaddam, speaking to VOC's Breakfast Beat on Wednesday morning.

However, the group seems to have had a change of heart on its membership after VOC raised questions about the role of alleged errant operators on board. Asked about its membership, Mukaddam said FotH was mainly spearheaded by two consumer bodies - the National Consumer Forum and advocacy group, Hajj Watch. On Tuesday VOC reported that As Sabireen had confirmed that they were part of the group while Gulf International Tours strongly denied being part of the group, stating that any individuals claiming to belong to this company in joining FotH had done so fraudulently and would face legal action.

Gulf International Tours not part of FotH

Gulf International Tours has categorically distanced itself from a new haj group, the Friends of the Hujjaj (FotH), who met in Athlone on Tuesday evening to obtain a mandate from pilgrims seeking to "clean up" the haj industry. Earlier sources told VOC that representatives from the company had been part of the "broad church" who affilliated themselves with FotH, something that was confirmed by FotH spokesperson, Imraahn Mukaddam to VOC in an earlier report filed Tuesday.
