    Haj: tabloid must apologise

A daily tabloid newspaper has been slapped on the wrist by the Press Ombudsman after it published three scathing articles about a local haj operator whom it accused of scamming one hujaaj of his haj money. In October this year, the Daily Voice newspaper reported that Aslam Toefy from Dhuyufullah Haj and Umrah Travel had stolen R78 000 from Abdullah Damon, for a haj package he did not deliver as promised.

    We are clean: Dhuyufullah

"We only deal with Sahuc visas. We do not accept any other visas other than those given to us on accreditation by the regulator." That was how Aslam Toefy from Dhuyufullah Haj and Umrah Tours tried to clear his name, after being pinned as one of the errant haj operators in the haj visas debacle. Toefy was responding to questions surrounding the ongoing fracas in the haj industry that prompted one aggrieved pilgrim to speak out in a local tabloid paper.

    'Accreditation not our fault'

The director of a haj travel operator fingered in the haj visas scandal on Wednesday denied any wrongdoing, after it was alleged he had swindled R78,000 from an elderly Cape Town couple longing to perform haj. In a scathing article in the Daily Voice on Tuesday, 66 year old Abdullah Damon claimed that Aslam Toefy from Dhuyufullah Haj and Umrah tours had promised that they would undertake the holy pilgrimage, despite not being accredited by the South African Hajj and Umrah Council (Sahuc).

31 Haj Operators Approved for Hajj 2010

31 haj operators have been accredited to serve this year's pilgrims, one less than was the case last year. In 2006 39 operators were accredited. This shows a continuing trend of accredited haj operators that serve approximately 5,000 South African hujjaj.

This year's approved list was released by the South African Haj and Umrah Council on Thursday and now paves the way for the operators to start advertising their packages. At the same time, Sahuc advised pilgrims to make use of the opportunity to shop around before deciding on the operator of their choice. Consumer demand determines how big a slice of South Africa's haj quota each operator gets.
