    2nd SA death on haj

A second South African pilgrim passed away this weekend shortly after arriving in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia for haj. On Saturday the South African Hajj and Umrah Council's (Sahuc) haj mission in the Kingdom confirmed the death of 65-year-old Fuad Abrahams who had been with the Travel Unlimited group. His death comes nine days after the death of the first South African, 65-year-old Mogamat Armien Haroun of the Strand who passed away in Madina. He was travelling with his wife and daughter in the Al Mujaahiedeen Haj & Umrah Travel group.

    1st SA haji passes away

The first South African haji passed away in Madina on Thursday. According to the South African Hajj and Umrah Council (Sahuc), its haj mission in the City of the Prophet reported the death of 65-year-old Mogamat Armien Haroun early on Thursday morning. The deceased lived in the Strand and was with his wife, Kulthum and daughter Nadia on haj as part of the Al Mujaahiedeen Haj & Umrah Travel group. They left last Thursday on the delayed Egypt Air flight.

    Hujjaj delayed by strike

A work slowdown by air traffic controllers of Egypt Air has caused a delay in the departure of 125 hujjaj who were due to depart from O R Tambo airport on Thursday. The group travelling with Al Mujaahiedeen Haj & Umrah included 115 hujjaj who left Cape Town International on two flights earlier in the day. However, speaking to VOC on Thursday evening, Shaheen Essop, secretary general of the South African Hajj and Umrah Council (Sahuc), said the hujjaj have been provided with accommodation in a hotel close to the airport.

31 Haj Operators Approved for Hajj 2010

31 haj operators have been accredited to serve this year's pilgrims, one less than was the case last year. In 2006 39 operators were accredited. This shows a continuing trend of accredited haj operators that serve approximately 5,000 South African hujjaj.

This year's approved list was released by the South African Haj and Umrah Council on Thursday and now paves the way for the operators to start advertising their packages. At the same time, Sahuc advised pilgrims to make use of the opportunity to shop around before deciding on the operator of their choice. Consumer demand determines how big a slice of South Africa's haj quota each operator gets.
