    Emotions high as hajis return

    Smiles and warm embraces greeted the 50 pilgrims that arrived from the Saudi Kingdom on Monday at Cape Town International airport viaTurkish Airlines. The hujjaj, travelling with the Al Anwar Haj group, were welcomed by a massive crowd of 300 people, who flooded the international arrival terminal and emotions ran high as they welcomed their loved ones back.

    The airport terminal was packed at 10am the morning as hundreds of family members waited in anticipation for their loved ones, some crying as the glowing hujjaj walked through the terminal doors. Amongst the 50 hujaaj were VOC presenter, Jamiel Wallace, and his wife Faghma, trust member Yusuf Bailey and some of the station's sponsored hujjaj.

    2 SA hujjaj pass away

    Two South African hujjaj passed away immediately after the day of Arafat, a day when Muslims believe that all pilgrims are cleansed of all sins after begging for forgiveness at the climax of the annual haj. Hajja Amina Goodman of Eastride Mitchells Plain (76), who had been one of VOC's five sponsored hujjaj travelling with Al Anwar, passed away in the early hours of this morning.

    Last sponsored hajis leave

    Following the departure on Sunday of seven hajis who had been sponsored - including five from VOC, Al-Anwar Hajj & Umrah on Friday announced that two more hajis who had been sponsored were schedule to depart on Saturday. According to a staff member at Al Anwar, Washiela Smith and Fariema Harris - who both come from Blikkiesdorp on the Cape Flats - had not been accredited by the South African Hajj and Umrah Council (Sahuc).

    Al Anwar apologises

    One of the haj operators implicated in the haj visa scandal has apologised for "any inconvenience caused during the issuing of the visas for Haj 1432". In a brief statement issued by the directorate of Al Anwar, the company reported on Wednesday: "All Al-Anwar accredited hujjaj have had their visa issues resolved. We endeavour to ensure that the guests of Allah will be offered the high standard of services always associated with this company and that their sacred pilgrimage will be completed in absolute comfort with the guidance of our acclaimed spiritual leaders, insha Allah."

    31 Haj Operators Approved for Hajj 2010

    31 haj operators have been accredited to serve this year's pilgrims, one less than was the case last year. In 2006 39 operators were accredited.This shows a continuing trend of accredited haj operators that serve approximately 5,000 South African hujjaj. 

    This year's approved list was released by the South African Haj and Umrah Council on Thursday and now paves the way for the operators to start advertising their packages. At the same time, Sahuc advised pilgrims to make use of the opportunity to shop around before deciding on the operator of their choice. Consumer demand determines how big a slice of South Africa's haj quota each operator gets.
