    MEC stands by Salt River Muslim Primary School decision

    Representatives of the Salt River Muslim Primary School on Monday met with the local MEC for Education, Donald Grant, but left with little hope that he would rescind his decision to close the school that is over 90 years old. However, Grant indicated that the school was welcome to consider other options to ensure its survival, even if it means considering having the community school move from a state aided school to an independent one.

    No appeal on Salt River Moslem Primary: WCED

    The decision to close the Salt River Moslem Primary on 31 December will not be reviewed by the local MEC for Education and "there is no provision in education legislation for an appeal in matters such as this". That was the unequivocal response sent to the school governing body on Monday in a letter signed by Mike Wilter, the head of the education ministry.

    SMP team gets mandate

    The appointed task team driving to halt the impending closure of the historical Salt River Moslem Primary school has been given a formal mandate by the community to save the school. That was the outcome of a public meeting held at the Blackpool Sports club in Salt River on Saturday, attended by some 100 people, including parents of learners, community members, educators and ulema.

    New future for SMP?

    While the Western Cape Education Department (WCED) may have taken a decision to close the Salt River Moslem Primary in Kipling Street, Salt River, 0n 31 December, the School Governing Body (SGB) and a task team initiated earlier in the year to deal with the crisis have other plans. This could include changing the school's status from being a state aided community school to being an independent school. This is one of the suggestions that will be discussed in greater detail at a public meeting on Saturday.

    Salt River Muslim Primary School: MEC acting in bad faith

    The basis used by the MEC for Education, Donald Grant, as reason for the closure of the Salt River Muslim Primary School in Kipling Street on 31 December, "was wholly false" and the process followed by various government departments on the closure was "totally flawed". Aaccording to the task team appointed to fight back against the schools' closure, the MEC was acting in bad faith by completely ignoring the community's sentiments on this issue.

    Salt River Moslem School calls public meeting

    As part of a determined fightback by the Salt River Moslem Primary to prevent the Western Cape Education Department (WCED) from closing the community school, the school's task team that was established to deal with the impending closure has called a public meeting for Saturday 15 October. The meeting will take place at the Salt River Blackpool Sports Hall in Shelley Street from from 2 - 4pm.
